It’s The Menopause – a book review
When I heard Kaz Cooke was writing a book on menopause, it automatically went on my list to read. Apparently, a lot of other people felt the same way, which I found out when I became number 37 on the waitlist at my local library (don’t judge – if I bought every book I want to read I’d be broke right now!)
Cooke never fails to deliver knowledge with humour and understanding, even on such a serious topic, which is why I was so keen to read it. Her book Up The Duff got me through pregnancy many years ago, with the same quality and delivery style, albeit about a very different topic. Ultimately, It’s The Menopause is almost 350 pages of information, supported by data from 9,000 Australian women that were surveyed.
Believe me when I say nothing is taboo or too awkward to mention in these pages, and I love the peppering of real-life quotes that highlight individual experiences. It certainly helps to know that so many other women are going through the myriad of changes that occur with menopause. And there are a lot of changes!
What I found most surprising is how differently it affects women. There were full chapters that don’t relate to me at all and other topics that had mere paragraphs that are closer to my experience, which just highlights the raft of ways that women can be affected by the same thing.
Ultimately, this book is a handy reference for all things relating to menopause that will probably save you a few trips to the GP or the less-reliable Doctor Google. If nothing else, it brings a light hearted voice to a serious topic and helps to reassure readers that you’re still ‘normal’ when you feel like you’re losing yourself.
Hang in there!
