Style (your way)

Have you noticed that in the past middle-aged women always seemed to cut their hair short? But why? Was it for practicality, the done thing for women of a certain age, or was it simply that they didn’t feel the need to keep up appearances for other people’s sake? Around the same time women were introducing colour to their wardrobe. Farewell to the classic black, white and denim uniform of their younger years and hello to loud, proud and looking to embrace life clothing. Was this some kind of dopamine dressing, using colour to reflect mood and positive vibes?

I’ve noticed among my peers a fairly even split between these two camps of style, although the short haircut no longer seems to be part of the shift. There are those that adopt the classic look, safe and sophisticated in the knowledge that they are not going to stand out from the crowd. While there are others (like myself) that have thrown ourselves into a rainbow colour palette and no longer give a shit if someone doesn’t like how we dress.

I once had a woman I worked with told that in order to be taken seriously in the workforce, she needed to stop wearing ‘fun’ earrings and adopt a more professional appearance. I was similarly told my earrings were a tad ‘ethnic’ for the office, but times have changed. Post-covid there are a multitude of fashion changes that have taken place. There are people that no longer where pants after spending too long in lounge clothes to ever go back to restrictive leg wear, and definitely not high heels! On the flip side, some of us have come out relishing the times we actually get to use our ‘good’ clothes and slap on a bit of lipstick.

Whatever the case is for you, embrace it for what you want because really, who’s looking anyway? And if they are looking, let them see someone rocking clothes that make you happy just because you can. After all, you’re never too old to add a strip of hot pink to your hair, if you want to…
